Evergreen woody climber · Apocynaceae · fragrant white flowering

Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘White Wings’®

It flowers beautifully and smells wonderful 🤍

Family: Apocynaceae · Pot diameter: 3 litres · Height: 70cm

  • Fragrant white pinwheels
  • Glossy evergreen foliage
  • Vigorous twining growth
  • Sun or partial shade

Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘White Wings’® is a vigorous evergreen star jasmine that builds a deep-green surface and lights it with pure white, strongly fragrant flowers. Small five-lobed pinwheels open in groups and stand crisply against glossy, leathery leaves. The contrast is classic but never flat: the whole flowering surface appears to flicker, while the perfume gives an entrance, courtyard or seating area a presence of its own.

On a pergola beside seating or a large trellis, the white flowers look especially bright as the sun lowers. Smooth leaf surfaces and airy flower clusters create contrasting textures across the same green screen.

What makes it special

A vigorous evergreen veil of glossy leaves and clusters of fragrant white pinwheel flowers.

Clear white fragrance

White flowers about 2.5cm across open as five-lobed pinwheels and perfume warm air.

Dense green foundation

Leathery leaves about 5–8cm long create evergreen cover and often colour red or bronze in winter.

Large-scale cover

Numerous twining stems can fill a tall trellis, a fence fitted with wires or a pergola when distributed gradually.

Why you will love it: it keeps a broad vertical surface green throughout the year, then turns it into a luminous scented curtain in summer.

Planting position

A large scented pergola

Plant beside strong mesh, tensioned wires or a pergola near a route, but not against a bare wall without support. For continuous cover, allow about 1.5–2m between plants and distribute leaders in both directions as they lengthen.

Colour & compatibility

White over blue

White flowers and dark green foliage gain a crisp outline above blue globes, purple spires and silver texture.

  • Agapanthus ‘Crystal Blue’ — blue globes at the lower level of the white scented surface.
  • Oenothera lindheimeri — airy white flowers that extend the pale palette without making a dense base.
  • Stachys byzantina — low silver foliage on the outer, drier edge, beyond the climber’s more regularly watered root zone.

Care at a glance

Light

Full sun to bright partial shade; more light usually means more flowers, with shade from fiercely reflected afternoon heat.

Watering

Water regularly while rooting and in summer heat, then deeply as the top layer dries, never leaving the base permanently wet.

Climate & hardiness

RHS H4; choose a sheltered site and protect the root zone during prolonged severe frost.

Safety

The ASPCA lists the species as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses, but milky sap may irritate and the plant is not food.

Detailed careComplete care guideEight practical points: Position, Support, Watering, Soil, Feeding, Pruning, Winter, Safety.

Position

Give it a bright sheltered aspect with enough room for mature cover to breathe and remain accessible.

Support

Use substantial wires or mesh and check that the structure can bear many years of accumulated growth.

Watering

Maintain even moisture in the first year and soak deeply in summer heat instead of applying frequent surface sprinkles.

Soil

Fertile, organic and freely drained, with no water standing around the crown.

Feeding

Apply a thin organic mulch and light balanced spring feed, avoiding excess nitrogen.

Pruning

After the main flower flush, remove unwanted length and redistribute new leaders before they become woody.

Winter

Keep drainage open, protect roots from prolonged frost and expect natural bronzing of the leaves.

Safety

Wear gloves for pruning, keep white sap away from eyes and mouth and do not use the plant as food.

Development over timeHow the white wings take shapeThree stages from the first tied leaders to a broad scented surface.

First flexible leaders

Young stems wind loosely around wires and begin to define the direction of cover.

Dense evergreen lattice

Side branches close the gaps with glossy leaves and establish a permanent green foundation.

White scented wave

Clusters of five-lobed flowers open on mature lateral shoots through summer.

What to expect after planting: The first growing period is mainly about rooting and organising a few leaders. Horizontal training encourages side shoots, thickens the surface and brings flowers lower and more evenly across it.

History & originCultivar originThe name ‘White Wings’ in contemporary cultivation.

Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘White Wings’® continues the garden tradition of star jasmine: evergreen stems climbing their support and white flowers scenting the summer garden. It is cultivated under this name and included in the RHS plant directory.

Its original breeder and first year of introduction are not known with certainty. The traceable story is its cultivated presence as a vigorous, white-flowered climber, without attributing an undocumented cross to it.

Greenleaf for Plant NerdsScience nobody asked forBotanical details for anyone curious about what lies behind the plant’s appearance

A twining stem

A young axis circles wire or slender support; it has no adhesive pads with which to fix itself to a bare wall.

Leathery evergreen leaf

Its glossy surface and relatively thick blade limit water loss, while cold can promote anthocyanin accumulation and produce deep-red winter colour.

A flower with a tube

Five petals unite low down in a tube and turn in one direction, creating the white pinwheel outline.

Frequently asked questions

Six specific answers about mature size, fragrance, support, cold and correct management of White Wings.

01How large does White Wings become?

The RHS gives an ultimate range of 8–12m high and 4–8m wide in unrestricted long-term growth; pruning and support contain it.

02Are the white flowers fragrant?

Yes. Small white pinwheels open in groups and carry a strong sweet scent in warm weather.

03Can it attach itself to a wall?

No. It needs wires, mesh or a pergola around which its young stems can twine.

04Is it evergreen?

Usually in a mild site, although cold may redden or bronze leaves and severe frost can cause losses.

05When should it be pruned?

Prune after the main flower flush to contain length and redistribute new growth before it becomes woody.

06Is it safe for pets?

The ASPCA lists Trachelospermum jasminoides as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses, but its sap may irritate and it should not be eaten.
