Evergreen flowering outdoor climber · Apocynaceae · twining stems with fragrant pink flowers

Trachelospermum ‘Star of Sicily’®

For when you want fragrance, climbing growth and a more unusual colour together 💗

Family: Apocynaceae · Pot diameter: 15cm · Height: 35–40cm

  • Fragrant pink stars
  • Evergreen foliage
  • Twining growth
  • For pergolas & trellises

Trachelospermum ‘Star of Sicily’® dresses a pergola or trellis in glossy dark green foliage and fragrant soft-pink flowers. The small five-lobed stars open in a playful pinwheel form, creating a gentler and more unusual take on classic evergreen climbing cover. Near an entrance or seating area, it combines privacy, colour and fragrance in an elegant living surface that remains attractive through every season.

The flowers open soft pink and stand out clearly against the dark evergreen base. The small leathery leaves can take on bronze or reddish tones in cold weather, extending interest beyond the main flowering season.

What makes it special

Fragrant pink flowers, a glossy evergreen base and twining stems create cover with detail rather than a simple green mass.

Pink pinwheels

Each flower forms five twisted lobes around a warmer centre and releases a pleasant fragrance.

Glossy evergreen leaf

Small oval leaves make a dense dark surface that sets off the pink flowers.

Trainable climbing growth

Flexible stems twine around wire or mesh and can be guided with precision.

Why you will love it: it offers fragrant evergreen cover with pink flowers, a combination far more distinctive than the familiar white star jasmine.

In the garden & on the balcony Placement & plant combinations Fragrance at eye level · sun to bright partial shade · firm support.
Planting position

Fragrance at eye level

Train it on firm mesh, wires, a pergola or arch near a path or seating area. Allow about 1.2–1.5m between plants for cover. Where walls or paving reflect intense heat, give it afternoon shade.

Colour & compatibility

Pink, blue and silver

The dark evergreen surface and pink flowers read most clearly above low blue blooms and silver foliage.

  • Agapanthus ‘Crystal Blue’ — blue globes below the pink climbing display.
  • Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ — dark purple spires that fill the base.
  • Geranium ‘Rozanne’ — low blue flowers in cool, well-drained soil at the base.

Detailed care Complete care guide Eight practical points for healthy twining stems and even evergreen cover.

Position

Sun to bright partial shade, with protection from intensely hot reflected afternoon sun.

Watering

Water regularly in the first year and during strong heat; later it tolerates short dry spells but flowers best with even moisture.

Soil

Fertile, organic and very well-drained soil with no standing water.

Feeding

Use a light spring feed and thin organic mulch, avoiding excess nitrogen that produces long soft stems.

Seasonal behaviour

Rated RHS H4 (about −10 to −5°C); choose a sheltered position and protect the root area from severe frost.

Pruning & clearing

Remove dead or wayward stems in early spring or after the main flowering period, then retie new growth.

Safety

The white milky sap may irritate sensitive skin; wear gloves when pruning and wash your hands before touching your eyes or mouth.

Reading the plant

Yellow leaves with a wet base often indicate poor drainage; check water movement and root aeration at the same time.

Development over time How the support fills Three stages from the first trained stems to the fragrant pink veil.

Training the main stems

Young flexible shoots are tied loosely onto a firm support.

Lateral cover

New branches fill gaps and organise the evergreen surface.

What to expect after planting: At first it invests in roots and a few flexible stems. As those stems are trained over the support and begin to branch, the evergreen surface closes and carries increasing numbers of pink flowers.

History & origin Cultivar origin A pink-flowered selection found at a Japanese nursery, also known as ‘Pink Showers’.

Trachelospermum ‘Star of Sicily’® is also sold as ‘Pink Showers’. The pink selection’s story passes through a variegated-plant nursery in Japan, where Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana noticed trays of plain green plants among the unusual foliage forms.

Through an interpreter, he asked Mr Sato what made them special and learned that the flowers were pink. Nurseries Caroliniana offered the selection in the United States as ‘Pink Showers’; in European trade it is also found as ‘Star of Sicily’. The original breeder’s name and selection year have not been clearly preserved.

Climbing by twining

Young stems coil around wire or a slender support; they have neither adhesive pads nor aerial roots with which to attach unaided to a bare wall.

Five fused corolla lobes

The corolla forms a short tube that opens into five lobes; their shared direction of twist creates the characteristic pinwheel form.
