  • Pink cool-season tones
  • Plantarium Silver 2022
KVBC Plantarium/Groen-Direkt 2022 silver medal for Pittosporum Bannow Bay

Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Breebay’ Bannow Bay® resembles a small palette that changes with the seasons. Wavy leaves combine olive green and cream, with pink tones becoming stronger as the weather cools. Fine dark twigs show between them and sharpen the bright variegation. Its naturally rounded crown gives this changing colour a calm outline. The result is an evergreen shrub with a clear shape and enough intricate detail to reward a position where it can be enjoyed close up.

Use it as a low evergreen sphere by an entrance, in a repeated rhythm along a path or as a pair of pots, allowing the natural crown to remain slightly organic.

Silver award, KVBC Plantarium/Groen-Direkt 2022.

What makes it distinctive

Three elements define this exact cultivar’s form and presence.

Natural roundness

Short branching fills the crown evenly without formal topiary.

Cool-season pink change

Pale leaf regions flush more strongly as temperatures fall.

Small wavy leaf

Wavy margins add fine movement within the compact mass.

Why you’ll love it: the same rounded crown shifts from olive-green and cream to pink winter tones, keeping colour through the seasons.

Planting position

Ideal position

Provide sun or light partial shade with shelter from very cold wind. Allow an initial width of 60–80cm and additional room for the crown’s later growth.

Colour & compatibility

Compatible combinations

Cream and pink gain depth beside dark green and upright blades. Put Armeria on the sunniest, drier outer edge, watered less often than the main shrub.

  • Hebe ‘Green Globe’ — the small green sphere repeats the form without variegation
  • Phormium ‘Pink Stripe’ — upright pink-green blades contrast linear height with the low sphere
  • Armeria maritima — low pink heads fill the base in an equally free-draining exposed position

Detailed careComplete care guideLight, watering, soil, feeding, pruning and problem prevention.

Position & light

Sun or light partial shade, protecting variegated foliage from extreme afternoon heat.

Watering & drainage

Water when the upper few centimetres of soil have dried and never leave water standing.

Soil & repotting

Organic free-draining soil from slightly acidic to neutral, with rapid removal of surplus water.

Feeding

One light application of balanced feed in early spring is enough for steady new growth.

Pruning & habit

After the main growth flush, selectively shorten any projecting shoot. Remove dead wood and retain the natural rounded surface of wavy leaves.

Problem prevention

Watch for spotting when foliage stays wet and chlorosis in very lime-rich compost.

Development through timeFrom establishment to mature habitFrom first establishment to the exact plant’s natural mature habit.

First season

The newly planted shrub establishes roots and retains a few fine, dark main branches.

Establishment

Side branching fills the rounded outline with small wavy leaves. Cream and green take on pink tones in cold weather.

Mature scale

At around four years it may be 1m tall and 60cm across. The crown continues growing, so this size is not a final limit.

History & originCultivar originAn Irish selection by Annette and Pierce Breen.

Variegation within the blade

Cream areas of the leaf contain less chlorophyll than green tissue. A shoot carrying entirely green leaves has a greater proportion of chlorophyll-bearing tissue and may gradually outgrow variegated shoots. This is a change in the new shoot, rather than a simple seasonal colour change in the same leaf.
