What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Official Rio® Mandevilla series logo

Mandevilla hybrida Rio® Deep Red delivers red with genuine depth: large velvet flowers open crimson-red against glossy dark foliage. Compact upright branching keeps the display dense and close to the base instead of sending it to the top of long vines. Fresh buds succeed older flowers throughout the warm season. Fresh flowers retain an especially polished finish.

It is the strongest colour anchor in the Rio® series and can transform a sunny terrace by itself. In a simple black, terracotta or grey pot the red appears even cleaner, while controlled growth keeps the composition polished and orderly.

Texas Superstar® recognition for the Rio® series.

What makes it distinctive

Rio® Deep Red is distinguished by red with depth and two further characters specific to this exact selection.

Red with depth

The corolla carries deep red pigment without readily sliding towards pink in bright light.

Dark glossy ground

Thick leaves create a cool green background that projects every red funnel.

Dense base

Side shoots begin low to build a full crown before any significant vining appears.

Why you will love it: it delivers the intensity of a red tropical climber in a dense form that looks complete even without a large support.

Planting position

Best position

Use a warm, sunny position with a compact trellis, hoop or other permanent support. Train more than one stem onto it so the Rio® series’ limited vining makes a dense, upright flowering surface.

Colour & compatibility

Compatible planting

Pair with Helichrysum petiolare, Salvia farinacea and Cordyline australis ‘Red Star’ for silver, blue and vertical burgundy contrast in separate pots.

  • Helichrysum petiolare — extends the composition with a different flowering season and compatible light, position and soil moisture.
  • Salvia farinacea — extends the composition with a different flowering season and compatible light, position and soil moisture.
  • Cordyline australis ‘Red Star’ — provides clear foliage contrast and strengthens the palette without competing with the main silhouette.

Care at a glance

Light

A very bright sunny position after gradual acclimatisation. At the height of a heatwave, morning sun limits scorch and bud drop.

Water

Water deeply as the surface dries and always empty the saucer. Alternating severe drought with saturation causes buds to drop.

Climate & hardiness

Warm-loving and frost tender. Growth slows below roughly 10–12 °C, so move it promptly to a bright protected position.

Safety

The white milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Wear gloves when pruning and prevent ingestion.

Soil & drainage

Use a rich but aerated mix with perlite or pumice and generous drainage. Roots require oxygen even while the plant is using water rapidly.

Feeding

Feed little and often during active growth with adequate potassium and trace elements. Stop as nights cool and new growth slows.

Pruning & support

Pinch lightly after a flowering flush and train at least two flexible stems over the permanent support. Tie them loosely where needed and remove only excessively long or weak growth before overwintering.

Winter

Move before the first cold spell to a frost-free place with abundant light and less frequent watering. Check leaf undersides for spider mites.

Development over timeFrom young plant to mature presenceEstablishment, specific architecture and the plant's real mature garden volume.

Initial establishment

Once adjusted to the new light level, it activates side shoots and successive flowering tips. Stable temperature and watering in response to surface drying limit bud loss.

Building its form

Deep Red fills its base with side shoots before extending selected tips. At maturity flowers distribute across more levels, producing a dense red arc above dark foliage.

Mature expression

At maturity it keeps a compact supported habit 20–60 cm high and 30–50 cm wide, with more than one limited-extension stem trained over the support.

History & originCultivar originSyngenta Flowers’ official Rio® Deep Red selection, product code 70003886, with upright growth and limited vining.

Rio® Deep Red belongs to Syngenta Flowers’ established Mandevilla hybrida Rio® series and is listed under product code 70003886. The series combines early flowering, strong basal branching and upright growth to 20–60 cm.

Stem extension is limited rather than absent. Young tips retain a climbing response and can be trained onto a compact permanent support, creating more flowering points over a dense upright framework.

Vacuolar pH and anthocyanins

Red anthocyanins occupy vacuoles in epidermal cells and change spectral behaviour with pH, co-pigments and metal ions. ‘Deep red’ is therefore an emergent optical trait rather than the name of one unique pigment.

Laticifer network

Apocynaceae tissues are traversed by branched laticifer elements. When a shoot is cut, latex emerges and coagulates at the surface while carrying defensive compounds.

Frequently asked questions

Six precise answers for Rio® Deep Red, from its present scale to mature behaviour.

01What does the present size of Rio® Deep Red mean?

The listed 40–50 cm is its height on arrival. Long-term placement must allow for a mature scale of 20–60 cm by 30–50 cm rather than today's young outline.

02Where will Rio® Deep Red perform best?

Use as a single red focus on a very bright terrace against a neutral wall, leaving space around the crown so dark leaves frame every flower clearly.

03How do I know when Rio® Deep Red needs water?

Water deeply as the surface dries and always empty the saucer. Alternating severe drought with saturation causes buds to drop.

04When should I prune Rio® Deep Red?

Pinch lightly after a flowering flush to increase side branching. Shorten excessively long shoots before overwintering without hard-pruning a stressed plant.

05Why has the red become lighter?

High night temperature, shade and flower age can soften the tone. Assess a fresh flower in good light before assuming the cultivar has changed.

06Is it the same as Rio® Petite Red?

No. Petite Red belongs to a separate smaller family with even less vining and a lower mature scale.
