What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Mandevilla hybrida Rio® Petite Red answers gardeners who love tropical red but want no vines at all. Its very small upright crown is covered with bright red funnels that look disproportionately large above glossy foliage. Short internodes and natural branching create a dense flowering cushion from the first weeks. Every flower dominates its compact setting.

It fits a small terrace table, narrow outdoor ledge or front row of a composition without support. Despite its scale it never reads as a minor decoration; clear red has enough intensity to organise the entire palette around it.

What makes it distinctive

Rio® Petite Red is distinguished by no support required and two further characters specific to this exact selection.

No support required

Shoots stay upright and short, forming a complete outline without trellis or hoop.

Large flower, small crown

The ratio of funnel to foliage makes every flower look especially powerful.

Colour at tabletop height

Its low scale brings red close to the eye rather than lifting it overhead.

Why you will love it: it makes mandevilla accessible to the smallest sunny balcony without sacrificing a centimetre of colour intensity.

Planting position

Best position

Use it in a sunny, warm position on a terrace table, low plinth or at the front of a composition. This selection remains self-supporting and needs no trellis, hoop or other support.

Colour & compatibility

Compatible planting

Pair with Festuca glauca, Calibrachoa ‘Superbells Lemon Slice’ and Senecio candicans ‘Angel Wings’ for a compact contrast of blue, yellow and silver.

  • Festuca glauca — adds linear texture and movement without hiding the plant’s characteristic mature outline.
  • Calibrachoa ‘Superbells Lemon Slice’ — extends the composition with a different flowering season and compatible light, position and soil moisture.
  • Senecio candicans ‘Angel Wings’ — provides clear foliage contrast and strengthens the palette without competing with the main silhouette.

Care at a glance

Light

A very bright sunny position after gradual acclimatisation. At the height of a heatwave, morning sun limits scorch and bud drop.

Water

Water deeply as the surface dries and always empty the saucer. Alternating severe drought with saturation causes buds to drop.

Climate & hardiness

Warm-loving and frost tender. Growth slows below roughly 10–12 °C, so move it promptly to a bright protected position.

Safety

The white milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Wear gloves when pruning and prevent ingestion.

Soil & drainage

Use a rich but aerated mix with perlite or pumice and generous drainage. Roots require oxygen even while the plant is using water rapidly.

Feeding

Feed little and often during active growth with adequate potassium and trace elements. Stop as nights cool and new growth slows.

Pruning

Pinch lightly after a flowering flush only when more lateral branching is needed. Keep the natural self-supporting habit and remove only weak or disproportionately long shoots before overwintering.

Winter

Move before the first cold spell to a frost-free place with abundant light and less frequent watering. Check leaf undersides for spider mites.

Development over timeFrom young plant to mature presenceEstablishment, specific architecture and the plant's real mature garden volume.

Initial establishment

Once adjusted to the new light level, it activates side shoots and successive flowering tips. Stable temperature and watering in response to surface drying limit bud loss.

Building its form

Instead of long leaders, Petite Red repeats very short internodes and lateral nodes. The mature form broadens slightly into a low hemisphere while flowers remain concentrated on the outer surface.

Mature expression

At maturity it remains self-supporting and non-vining, 15–30 cm high and 20–30 cm wide, with short lateral axes and a dense low crown.

History & originCultivar originSyngenta Flowers’ distinct Rio® Petite Red selection, product code 70050991, documented as upright and non-vining.

Rio® Petite Red is a distinct member of Syngenta Flowers’ Rio® Petite family and is listed under product code 70050991. The family is defined by very early flowering and exceptionally compact branching.

The selection is described as upright, 15–30 cm tall at maturity and non-vining. This genuinely separates it from ordinary mandevillas: short lateral axes remain self-supporting and build a dense low crown without a trellis.

Compression through internode length

Small form does not necessarily mean fewer nodes but much shorter distances between them. Repeated short internodes compress leaves and flowering sites into minimal vertical space.

Reduced apical extension

The non-vining form does not sustain the long continuous apical extension of a climber. Growth is distributed among short lateral axes, so the plant retains a self-supporting domed outline.

Frequently asked questions

Six precise answers for Rio® Petite Red, from its present scale to mature behaviour.

01What does the present size of Rio® Petite Red mean?

The listed 25–30 cm is its height on arrival. Long-term placement must allow for a mature scale of 15–30 cm by 20–30 cm rather than today's young outline.

02Where will Rio® Petite Red perform best?

Use in a small stable pot on a table, low plinth or balcony foreground, against an open neutral background and away from tall plants that would shade the low crown.

03How do I know when Rio® Petite Red needs water?

Water deeply as the surface dries and always empty the saucer. Alternating severe drought with saturation causes buds to drop.

04When should I prune Rio® Petite Red?

Pinch lightly after a flowering flush to increase side branching. Shorten excessively long shoots before overwintering without hard-pruning a stressed plant.

05Will it begin climbing later?

The Petite family is selected as non-vining. It may stretch slightly in shade or overfeeding, but does not develop the normal vine of ordinary mandevilla.

06Does petite mean it needs a tiny pot?

It needs a proportionate freely drained pot, not a constricted root space. Small height is genetic and is not created by crowding roots.
