What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

COMPACT TROPICAL DIPLADENIA · UPRIGHT HABIT · RED FLOWERS

Dipladenia ‘Clete’®

If you want red that lasts all season, this does exactly the job 🌺

Family: Apocynaceae · Container: 3L · Height: 60cm

  • Red flowers
  • Naturally compact
  • Upright without support
  • Protect from frost

Dipladenia ‘Clete’® gathers vivid summer red into a full, upright flowering display. Large trumpet-shaped blooms stand clearly above glossy green leaves, while fresh buds keep the composition lively as one flower follows another. Naturally compact branching gives the plant substance near the base and a clean, self-supporting outline. A pot beside an entrance is enough to make its rich red the most inviting focal point in the arrangement.

Its upright habit stands without a trellis or obelisk, leaving the flowers centre stage. Lower blue or white flowers in neighbouring pots and fine, dark foliage beside it create a generous summer group. The effect comes from a full flowering plant rather than from a tall climbing structure.

What makes it special

The Qdeville® series combines a full base, firm upright stems and abundant flowering.

Red in succession

Fresh buds open above older blooms and preserve a clear red display through the warm season.

A dense flowering base

Short inner branches fill the lower section, keeping the crown leafy close to the pot.

Upright, full habit

Firm stems hold the branching crown without requiring a trellis or obelisk.

Why you will love it: It fills the view with clear red and builds a compact upright presence that is easy to control.

Planting position

Ideal position

Choose a warm, very bright position with air movement and shelter from strong gusts. A stable pot shows the naturally upright habit clearly.

Colour & compatibility

Compatible combinations

Low blue flowers, burgundy linear foliage and white starry blooms in separate pots frame the upright red display.

  • Scaevola aemula ‘Blue Fan’ — blue fan-shaped flowers create a cool lower contrast in front of the upright red display, in a separate pot
  • Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’ — burgundy blades and airy plumes add movement at the base beside the full flowering crown
  • Pentas lanceolata ‘Graffiti White’ — white starry flower heads brighten the lower layer while allowing the clear red to remain the focal point

Care at a glance

Light

A very bright warm position with sun after gradual acclimatisation.

Watering

Water deeply once the top 2–3cm dries, allowing immediate drainage.

Climate & hardiness

Tropical and cold-sensitive; before cold nights, move it into a very bright frost-free place.

Safety

Not edible; milky sap may irritate skin, eyes and the digestive system.

Detailed careComplete care guideLight, water, growing mix, feeding, training, pruning and protection in one practical guide.

Light that preserves character

Increase direct sun over a week and avoid a hot still midday microclimate behind glass.

Check before watering

Check the mix first, then water until it runs from every drainage hole; empty the saucer immediately.

Free drainage

Use a rich freely drained mix and keep every drainage hole clear.

Natural branching

Allow the firm stems to form their compact crown. Do not force them around a support; remove broken or dead growth as needed.

Feeding without excess

During active flowering, apply a complete flowering feed at the label rate and always to a moist rootball.

Selective pruning

Before strong spring growth, selectively shorten overlong shoots to balance branching. Avoid repeated tip removal while buds are developing, and wear gloves when handling the milky sap.

Seasonal change

Before nights approach 10°C, inspect for pests and move the pot into a very bright frost-free place.

Development over timeFrom a full base to an upright flowering crownNatural branching and successive flowers through the warm season.

A full base

Short branches form low down and hold foliage and buds close to the base.

Upright branching

Firm stems grow upwards and outwards while retaining a naturally compact outline.

Successive flowers

New buds open in different parts of the crown, renewing the red display through the warm season.

What to expect after establishment: New side shoots, healthy leaves and fresh buds show the plant developing in its new position.

History & originCultivar originFrom a Danish compact-Mandevilla programme to a red cultivar named for an Amazon warrior.

Dipladenia ‘Clete’® belongs to Danish breeder Graff Breeding’s Qdeville® series. More than seven years of work went into combining naturally compact growth, firm upright stems and abundant flowering without obligatory support.

On 15 February 2020 the company announced names for three already tested selections: ‘Clete’ for red, ‘Marpe’ for pink and ‘Ainia’ for white. The names came from Amazons in Greek mythology. This red selection thus gained its name within a family developed around a full, upright habit.

Greenleaf for Plant NerdsScience nobody asked forBotanical mechanisms behind form, attachment and flowering

A specialised pollen-presenting unit

Five anthers converge around the style head and create a specialised pollen-transfer system. A pollinator follows a narrow route within the trumpet, bringing its body into contact with reproductive organs at a predictable point. This organisation is typical of Apocynaceae pollination biology.

Opposite leaves and branching

Leaves form in opposite pairs at stem nodes. Buds in their axils can develop into side shoots, explaining how a single shoot gradually contributes to a full branching crown.

Frequently asked questions

Six answers on natural habit, flowers, watering, pruning and winter.

01Does it need a trellis?

No. This selection has a naturally compact, upright habit and firm stems. It can stand without a climbing structure.

02How does it stay full?

Allow its natural branching to develop with sufficient light and space around the crown. Remove broken or dead growth and avoid repeatedly taking off flowering shoot tips.

03How does it retain a rich red?

Abundant light, gentle consistent feeding and shelter from extreme heat stress help fresh flowers open clearly.

04When should it be watered?

Water after the top 2–3cm of mix dries and let all surplus escape immediately through every hole.

05How should it be pruned?

At the end of its protected winter period, selectively shorten only overlong or weak shoots. Wear gloves and avoid cutting every new tip during flowering.

06Can it stay outdoors in winter?

Not in frost. Before cold nights, move it into a very bright frost-free place and reduce both water and feeding substantially.
