What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Zamioculcas ‘Dark Zamicro’

The little black number that stays out of the wardrobe 🖤

Family: Araceae · Pot diameter: 10.5 cm · Height: 35 cm

  • Near-black leaflets
  • Compact upright habit
  • Slow growth
  • Evergreen foliage
  • Low water needs

Zamioculcas ‘Dark Zamicro’ gives dark foliage a particularly crisp, glossy expression. Small, thick leaflets sit along upright axes, forming a compact arrangement of repeating curves. Reflections bring the almost black mature foliage to life, while greener young growth provides a pleasing contrast as it unfolds.

Its presence is linear and restrained, with enough character to stand alone. Beside pale wood, natural stone or a simple white pot cover, the dark surfaces appear even stronger. The small scale of the leaflets keeps the overall impression light despite their remarkably deep colour.

What makes it special

A dark foliage selection with its own small-leaved, compact architecture.

Smaller leaflets

The small scale of the leaflets creates a finer repeating pattern along each compound leaf.

Colour that matures

Young green growth darkens as it matures; this temporary contrast is part of its appearance.

Growth from the base

Leaves emerge from underground rhizomes, forming an upright clump that opens gently outwards.

Why you will love it: it adds a deep, almost black accent among green plants without quickly taking over the space.

In your space

Light on dark leaves

Place it on a table or shelf near a window with filtered light, leaving some space around the leaves. Avoid the dark back of a room and hot sunshine through glass.

Plant pairings

Gentle colour contrasts

Pale pot covers highlight the outline. Keep the following companions in separate pots so each can be watered when needed.

  • Dracaena trifasciata — upright blades continue the linear look and tolerate similar drying intervals.
  • Aspidistra elatior — broad green leaves contrast with the small dark leaflets in gentle indirect light.
  • Peperomia obtusifolia — lower, rounded foliage contrasts in form, with moisture checked separately.

Care at a glance

Light

Bright indirect light. Tolerates lower light with slower growth, but not complete darkness.

Watering

Let the mix dry deeply and the pot become light before watering again.

Atmosphere

Normal household humidity, a warm position and protection from cold draughts.

Pets

Keep away from children and pets that chew plants: the tissues contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, watering, humidity, substrate and feeding in detail

Light and position

Bright, diffused light helps maintain compact growth. In lower light, adjust watering downwards by checking how thoroughly the mix actually dries. Avoid strong midday sunshine.

Watering thoroughly

Check moisture below the surface. Once the mix is dry, water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain away. Never leave water in the pot cover or follow a fixed weekly schedule.

Air humidity

Daily misting is unnecessary. Gently remove dust with a damp cloth, supporting each leaf from underneath.

Temperature

Prefer approximately 18–26°C. Keep it indoors when temperatures approach 15°C and avoid cold glass, air conditioning and frost.

Potting mix

Use a porous, freely draining mix and a pot with drainage holes. Persistent moisture around the fleshy rhizomes is a greater risk than a delayed watering.

Feeding and repotting

In spring and summer, a complete houseplant fertiliser at the low label rate once or twice in total is sufficient while new growth is present. Skip feeding in cold conditions, low light or when growth has stopped. Repot when roots fill the pot, moving up only one size.

Botanical identity Botanical identity and origin The species and cultivated selection

The species

Zamioculcas zamiifolia belongs to the Araceae and originates in eastern and south-eastern Africa. The cultivated dark selection has a different history from the species' natural range.

A Dutch selection

‘Dark Zamicro’ was selected in September 2013 in Aarlanderveen, the Netherlands, by Adrianus Theodorus Spruit as a naturally occurring whole-plant mutation of ‘Zamicro’.

Stable characteristics

Vegetative propagation began in November 2013 and confirmed its compact habit, small leaflets and very dark mature colour. It received US plant patent USPP28847P3 in 2018; it is distinct from ‘Raven’.

Greenleaf for Plant Nerds Scientific facts nobody asked for Botanical details for those curious about what lies behind the plant’s appearance

A 'branch' that is a leaf

The upright axis carrying small leaflets is a pinnately compound leaf, not a branch with many separate leaves. The true stem base lies lower down in the rhizome.

An underground store

The swollen rhizomes are modified stems that store water and reserves. Together with the fleshy leaves, they explain why growth does not depend on constantly wet soil.

Flexible photosynthesis

Weak CAM photosynthesis has been measured in the species and increases under water stress. Some carbon dioxide uptake shifts to night-time, reducing water loss; this is not a permanent, fully nocturnal mode.

Regeneration from a leaflet

Under suitable conditions, a detached leaflet can form a new rhizome and roots before a new leaf appears. This slow sequence explains why propagation does not quickly produce a large plant.

Frequently asked questions

Answers about its dark colour and unhurried growth.

01 Why are the new leaves green?

This is normal. Young leaflets are green and darken as they mature. Do not suddenly expose them to strong sun to speed up the change.

02 Is it the same as Raven?

No. ‘Dark Zamicro’ is a distinct selection of Zamioculcas zamiifolia, with compact growth and smaller leaflets.

03 Can it live without any light?

No. It tolerates lower light but still needs light for photosynthesis. A dark room requires suitable artificial plant lighting.

04 Why is it yellowing and soft at the base?

First check whether the mix stays wet and whether water is trapped in the pot cover. Excess moisture can cause rot, but assessment requires checking the roots and overall conditions.

05 Will it grow quickly?

It grows relatively slowly and remains compact. New leaf production depends on light, temperature and root establishment.

06 Is it safe for pets?

It is unsuitable where pets chew plants. Calcium oxalate crystals can irritate the mouth and digestive tract; keep it out of reach.
