What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Semponium ‘Sienna’®

A 4-season color chameleon 🦎

Family: Crassulaceae · Pot diameter: 15cm · Height: 15cm

  • Layered rosettes
  • Seasonal colours
  • Fleshy leaves
  • Protect from frost
  • Hybrid of two genera

Semponium ‘Sienna’® resembles a small sculpture of layered rosettes, with a central tip and smaller rosettes gradually building its outline. Fleshy leaves open like narrow spoons, shifting between green, burgundy and red. Its appearance never stands still: the season and fresh growth change the balance, giving each plant a composition of its own. It is as much about the arrangement of the leaves as their colour.

Its branching form gains depth as the side rosettes fill different levels. Display it alone in a simple pot or among succulents with paler colours and clean geometric outlines. The appeal lies in the combination of colour and architecture, rather than waiting for flowers.

What makes it special

A hybrid with a recognisable, almost conical arrangement of rosettes.

Several levels

The central rosette is surrounded by side rosettes, creating a full, branching presence.

Colour that changes

Green and purple tones combine with stronger red during periods of good light and active growth.

Leaves with a curve

Elongated, fleshy leaves broaden towards the tip and form clearly defined rosettes.

For combining the detail of an individual rosette with the fullness of a small, branching plant.

In your space Placement & plant pairings Where it looks its best and which plants complement it
In your space

A bright position with seasonal moves

Choose a very bright position or a sunny terrace after acclimatisation. In intense heat, protect from the hottest afternoon sun. Move under shelter before winter frosts.

Plant pairings

Rosettes with different outlines

Keep companions in separate pots: their growth periods and water needs do not always coincide. Pale green and blue-grey foliage bring light alongside burgundy tones.

  • Aeonium arboreum — a taller branching outline, with watering managed separately.
  • Echeveria elegans — a low, blue-grey rosette for colour contrast.
  • Crassula ovata — a different fleshy leaf shape and a woodier presence.

Care at a glance

Light

A very bright position, with gradual acclimatisation to sun. Protect from extreme midday heat.

Watering

Soak the mix thoroughly and let it dry before watering again. Reduce water when growth slows, particularly in intense heat or cold.

Climate

Protect from frost and winter rain. The breeder's current recommended minimum is around 2°C, rather than exposure to frost.

Safety

An ornamental plant, not an edible one. Keep out of reach of chewing children and pets.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, drying cycle, climate, substrate and feeding in detail

Light and colour

Increase sun exposure gradually. Colour changes with the season and conditions; do not induce severe thirst or sunburn to make the plant redder.

The watering cycle

Water dry compost and allow complete drainage. Check more often during cool, bright periods of active growth; in intense heat or cold, reduce watering according to drying.

A freely draining mix

Choose an open succulent compost with plenty of porous mineral ingredients. A drainage hole is essential; do not leave water in the outer pot.

Winter protection

Move to a bright, sheltered position before frost. Having hardy succulents in its parentage does not make this particular hybrid suitable for an unprotected winter.

Light feeding

Feed lightly only during active growth with a specialist low-nitrogen liquid fertiliser, following its label. If compost supplies roughly 180 days of initial nutrition, do not add fertiliser at the same time.

Growth and repotting

With time it may form a branching mass around 30–40cm high and wide, depending on conditions. Repot when roots fill the pot, without making an excessive jump in size.

Botanical identity Botanical identity and origin The species and cultivated selection

Two genera, one hybrid

Semponium ‘Sienna’® belongs to Crassulaceae and comes from crossing Aeonium ‘Ice Warrior’ with Sempervivum ciliosum ‘Green Ice’. It is not a wild species with a natural population of its own.

The cross in Cornwall

Daniel Michael made the cross in 2016 in Penzance, Cornwall. The plant was selected in 2018 for its branching, rosette shape and colouring.

The cultivated ‘Sienna’

The selection was propagated vegetatively and is protected in the USA by plant patent PP34201. Its form and seasonal colour combine parental traits without reproducing every tolerance of its parents.

In the hybrid's parentage, wild Sempervivum ciliosum occurs in rocky places. Air around the roots and rapid removal of excess water have a corresponding practical value in a pot. For ‘Sienna’, retain a freely draining mix and frost protection: one parent's rocky origins are not a promise of the hybrid's winter hardiness.

Greenleaf for Plant Nerds Scientific facts nobody asked for Botanical details for those curious about what lies behind the plant’s appearance

A cross between genera

The parents belong to different genera within the same family. The hybrid combines genetic material from both, rather than being simply a colour form of an Aeonium.

A rosette has a growing centre

New leaves form at each shoot tip while older leaves move towards the outside. This succession creates the layered arrangement.

Side rosettes are shoots

The full outline comes from lateral branching: each new growing tip forms its own rosette. These are not separate leaves attached to a single flat base.

Flesh that stores water

Leaf thickness is associated with water stored in the tissues. This allows intervals of drying but does not remove the need for healthy, well-aerated roots.

Frequently asked questions

Colour, winter and everyday care for this particular selection.

01 Does it stay red all year?

No. Green, purple and red tones change with the season, light and growth.

02 Does it tolerate frost like a Sempervivum?

That is not a safe cultivation assumption. Protect the hybrid from frost; its breeder currently recommends a minimum of around 2°C.

03 How large does it grow?

In suitable conditions it may reach around 30–40cm high and wide. The 15cm pot refers to the size sold.

04 Should I water more during a heatwave?

Not automatically. If growth slows, water may be used more slowly. Check drying and protect from extreme sun.

05 Why are small rosettes forming around the large one?

They are part of this selection's branching habit. The side tips gradually fill the display.

06 Does it need a large pot straight away?

No. Wait for the root system to fill its pot, then increase the size carefully while maintaining fast drainage.
