  • Collectable fern
  • Tropical presence

Blechnum brasiliense 'Volcano' brings colour where most ferns remain purely green. Every new frond appears in red and copper tones, rises through the centre of the symmetrical rosette and matures to glossy deep green, creating an ever-changing collectable display on a shelf, low stand or bright corner.

Its upright, almost volcanic growth makes warm new fronds resemble flames above the older crown. In a simple black, terracotta or pale cover pot, the colour transition becomes the focal feature and adds tropical energy without excessive bulk.

What makes it special

The cultivar stands out because every flush of growth adds warm colour above the green base.

Form

Fronds rise upright from a compact centre and form successive tiers as they open.

Colour

Young blades move from red and copper through bright green and finally deep green.

Texture

The firm, lightly leathery surface keeps the linear arrangement of pinnae crisp.

Why you’ll love it: It offers recurring bursts of warm colour within a geometric tropical rosette.

In your space Placement & plant pairings Where it looks its best and which plants complement it
In your space

Where it looks its best

On a low stand, broad shelf or quiet corner with clear space around the rosette. Let the outer fronds open without touching a wall and choose a simple cover pot that emphasises the circular form.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Choices with compatible light needs and contrasting textures keep the arrangement balanced.

  • Calathea orbifolia — broad silver bands in a circular crown.
  • Scindapsus pictus — silver markings on a darker trail.
  • Anthurium crystallinum — velvet texture and bright venation.

Care at a glance

Light

Bright indirect light or bright shade. Avoid harsh direct sun.

Water

Water when the top 1–2 cm begins to dry. Allow complete drainage with no water left at the base.

Atmosphere

Moderate to higher humidity, clean airflow and roughly 17–27°C. Protect it from cold draughts.

Pets

Not known for marked toxicity, although the foliage is not intended for chewing.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, watering, humidity, substrate and nutrition in detail

Light and position

Provide bright, filtered light without harsh sun. A very dark position thins or dulls the foliage, while direct midday sun leaves dry marks.

Steady moisture

Check the mix regularly and water as the surface begins to lose moisture. Water evenly and allow immediate drainage, because steady moisture does not mean a saturated root zone.

Air humidity

Steady moderate to higher humidity keeps tips cleaner. A humidifier or plant grouping helps more than occasional misting, provided there is gentle airflow.

Clean foliage

Remove only fronds that are fully dry or damaged. Do not cut new growth while it is unfurling and avoid leaf-shine products because fern surfaces are naturally delicate.

Mix and repotting

An airy fern mix holds gentle moisture without compacting. Repot when roots fill the pot, move up one size and keep the crown at the same height.

Measured feeding

Use gentle feed during active growth, always at the label rate and on an already moist mix. Excess can scorch fine roots and frond tips.

Botanical identity Origin of the cultivar The species’ range and the history of the cultivated selection

Natural range

The species Blechnum brasiliense is native from central Mexico and Guatemala to southern tropical America.

Habitat

It grows in wet tropical habitats and can gradually form a short upright base beneath the rosette.

Botanical identity

'Volcano' is a cultivated trade selection distinguished by vivid red to copper new growth.

From natural habitat to care: Its wet tropical forest origin explains the preference for steady gentle moisture, bright shade and a warm atmosphere without a saturated mix.

Greenleaf for Plant Nerds Scientific facts nobody asked for Botanical details for anyone curious about the plant behind the foliage

Red is a juvenile stage

As a new frond hardens and chlorophyll increases, warm pigments recede and the blade becomes green.

Maturation creates several colours

Because fronds of different ages share one crown, red, copper and green can appear at the same time.

The centre organises the rosette

New fronds emerge successively from the top of an upright rhizome, maintaining the radial form.

It produces spores, not flowers

Mature fertile surfaces carry spore-bearing lines; the colour of new fronds is unrelated to flowering.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about growth and the plant’s most common signals.

01 Why do the red fronds turn green?

This is normal maturation. Warm pigments dominate a young frond and recede as the blade hardens and chlorophyll increases.

02 Why are the tips turning brown?

Dry air, irregular watering, mineral salts or harsh sun are common causes. Check the mix and position first, use soft water when practical and trim only tissue that is completely dry.

03 How do I know it needs water?

Check just below the surface with a finger and notice the pot's weight. Most ferns prefer gentle, steady moisture, but never a mix that stays saturated.

04 When does it need repotting?

When roots fill the pot, the mix dries unusually quickly or growth has become constrained. Repot during active growth, move up one size only and do not bury the crown more deeply.

05 Does the foliage need misting?

Misting raises humidity only briefly. Positioning, grouping plants or using a humidifier gives steadier results, always with gentle airflow and foliage that is not kept continually wet.

06 Is it safe for cats and dogs?

These ornamental ferns are not known for marked toxicity, but they are not food. Discourage persistent chewing and seek veterinary advice if any symptom appears.
