Copper on top, green below — it does the rest by itself 🎨
Family: Adoxaceae • Pot diameter: 15 cm • Height: 20–25 cm
Viburnum ‘Coppertop’ brings a “finished garden” look from day one: copper-toned new growth maturing to deep, glossy green; fragrant white spring bloom; and a compact, evergreen canopy that works as a natural backdrop all year. It’s ideal as a hedge and equally striking in large containers—where you need steady structure, colour and texture through the seasons.
Choose sun to partial shade and avoid heavy, waterlogged soils. For hedges, plant in a line with enough spacing for a uniform, filled-in canopy. In containers, use a roomy pot with excellent drainage to support fast growth and dense foliage.
Composition goal: warm foliage colour, crisp hedge outline and mass that ties into the space.
Taxonomic notes: Viburnum odoratissimum belongs to Adoxaceae, a group of ornamental shrubs valued for foliage, flowers and fruit. The species is a fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree with leathery, glossy leaves and highly fragrant bloom.
Native range & habitat: V. odoratissimum is native to South and Southeast Asia (India, Myanmar, the Philippines and nearby areas), thriving in warm, humid climates as hedging, backdrop plant or street tree. Thanks to its adaptability, it’s widely grown in mild and Mediterranean regions worldwide as a structural garden shrub.
Selection & propagation: Coppertop carries selection code 'Brant01' with PBR protection (EU 65327). Bred in the USA, with breeder of record Paul Klinger Jr. and development/management by Plant Development Services Inc. (PDSI). The goal: a more compact, upright V. odoratissimum with very glossy foliage and a reliable copper flush after each pruning.
Breeding story: Chosen from trials evaluating dozens of plants for copper flush intensity, heat/drought tolerance and base-to-tip density. The clone now known as 'Brant01' consistently outperformed peers for colour, gloss and form. It joined the Southern Living® Plant Collection and, through European partnerships, entered EU markets as Coppertop, retaining the original PBR code through production.
Responds very well to light–moderate shaping. Prune right after main spring bloom, lightly reducing new shoots to keep desired height and width. Each year you can remove 1–3 of the oldest woody stems at the base to renew the canopy. For hedges, favour frequent light trims over a single hard cut. Always use clean tools and follow with watering and a light organic feed.
