Three parts, one controlled route

Water rises from below. The insert remains visible.

The outer pot holds the water supply, while the cotton wick passes through the base of the transparent insert and gradually transfers moisture to the substrate by capillary action.

Self-watering does not mean "impossible to over-water": the amount of water that reaches the roots still depends on the substrate, the plant and how you manage the reservoir.

The basis of proper operation

The substrate determines how much water the wick carries

The reservoir and wick do not work independently of the mixture. Grain size, absorbency and aeration directly affect how much moisture remains around the roots.

Mineral and semi-hydro mixes

The most predictable choice

Mineral mix, pon-style materials and expanded clay combine air pores with controlled capillary transport. Because inorganic materials do not provide complete nutrition by themselves, proper fertilization is needed.

Organic aroid mix

For experienced and close monitoring

A very open, aerated organic mixture may be used, but the reservoir should not be kept full by habit. An absorbent mix can hold more moisture than the plant needs.

Avoid a dense, overly fine substrate

The self-watering system does not make a heavy mix safe. If the substrate is compacted or remains saturated, aeration is limited and the risk of root problems increases. See all substrates.

Setup without guesswork

Three steps to get capillary flow right

The initial setup is important: the wick must make proper contact with the substrate and the mixture must be evenly moistened before the reservoir takes over.

Pre-wet the wick

Place it on the base of the insert, with one part inside the substrate and the other low enough to reach the water in the reservoir.

Plant and water initially from above

Moisten the new mix evenly and let the excess water drain before placing the insert in the outer pot.

Fill and observe

Add water according to the level indicator and monitor the rate of consumption before deciding when to refill.

Cleaning and checking

Three little habits that keep the system running

The removable insert makes maintenance simple, as long as no scale, organic residue or clogged contact points remain.

Flush the reservoir

Lift the insert and periodically clean the outer pot with warm water, removing salts and debris.

Check the wick

Make sure it stays in contact with the substrate and the water. If it is hardened, clogged or worn, replace it.

Observe the roots

Combine their image with mix moisture and rate of water use, not just a calendar schedule.

Yes. All four Greenleaf options use and include a cotton wick.

06Which substrate is most suitable?

Mineral mix, pon-style materials, expanded clay and other aerated semi-hydro substrates usually offer the most predictable performance. The grain size must allow for air, drainage and controlled moisture transport.

07Can I use organic aroid mix?

Yes, but it requires experience and closer monitoring. Use a very open, aerated mix and don't keep the reservoir constantly full, because organic materials can hold moisture for longer.

08Does the system prevent overwatering?

No. It can provide a more consistent supply and reduce the frequency of watering, but too absorbent substrate, insufficient ventilation or a constantly full reservoir can hold more moisture than the plant needs.

09Can I see the roots and the water level?

Yes. The transparent insert provides a direct view of the root zone when you lift it, while the indicator on the outer pot helps you monitor the reservoir level.

10How often should I fill the reservoir?

There is no single schedule for all plants. Consumption varies with species, size, substrate, light and temperature. Observe the indicator and refill when the particular plant needs it.

11How is it cleaned?

Lift the clear insert, empty and rinse the outer pot with warm water and clean off any salts or organic residue. Also check the wick and avoid abrasive materials that can scratch the plastic.
