The raspberry that grows… like a tree! 🍓🌳
Family: Rosaceae · Pot diameter: 19cm · Height: approximately 30–45cm
Rubus crataegifolius RASPBERRY TOWER® ‘Hara-rasp’ builds a narrow vertical column filled with large glossy red fruit from June into August. Strong stems remain clustered, reach about 1.2m and usually stand without a large trellis, allowing the plant to fit beautifully in a small garden or generous container. It is a genuinely different Rubus: architectural, hardy and productive within minimal width, making a striking fruiting accent beside a door, path or compact terrace.
Retain three to five strong vertical stems and after harvest remove only those that have just fruited.
Plantarium 2022 Bronze award for its original columnar habit and value in small spaces.
RASPBERRY TOWER® stands out for naturally vertical architecture, strong stems and large fruit within an exceptionally narrow footprint.
The mature shrub stays around 60cm wide and grows mainly upwards.
Red berries over 2cm appear successively from June to August.
The compact vertical bundle usually needs only a discreet guide, not a trellis.
Why you will love it: It creates the impression of a small fruiting tower and fits where a classic raspberry row is impossible.
Plant in sun or bright partial shade, allowing 60–80cm between plants. In very hot areas choose morning sun.
Chive flowers, silver sage and low scabious emphasise the vertical silhouette.
Sun or bright partial shade; afternoon protection during prolonged heat.
Even moisture from flowering until the end of harvest.
Very good hardiness to about −25°C in the ground, with root protection in an exposed container.
Wash fully ripe fruit before eating.
Plant in deep fertile soil that drains well yet stays cool. Add organic mulch around the roots without covering the cane bases.
Water deeply when the top few centimetres dry. Even moisture from flowering to harvest helps fruit fill uniformly.
Retain 3–5 vertical stems around one slim central guide or small cage, without spreading them into a broad fan.
In early spring add mature compost and a balanced fruit-plant feed according to its label. Avoid excess nitrogen.
Mulch the roots, remove weeds by hand and pick frequently. During prolonged heat, provide light afternoon shade.
Keep gaps between vertical stems, water deeply and remove fruited stems after late August.
It is self-fertile and crops alone. Insects help large red fruit fill evenly.
Fruit ripens successively from June into August on stems grown the previous year.
Pick when fruit is vivid red, slightly soft and releases without pressure.
Secure netting to a separate frame as fruit begins to colour and leave easy access.
After planting: train the strongest stem vertically and do not spread the narrow bundle into a fan.
Immediately after harvest, with a winter check of laterals
RASPBERRY TOWER® fruits on canes grown the previous year. After the final picking remove only fruited canes at the base and tie new green canes into their place.
Action: Train new green canes separately from fruiting ones.
Retain: Retain 3–5 strong new canes.
Action: Spread last year’s canes over the wires and remove only overlong laterals.
Retain: Retain short well-lit laterals with flowers and fruit.
Action: After picking cut brown fruited canes at the base.
Retain: Tie green new canes to the vacant wires.
Use sharp, clean tools suited to the diameter of the wood.
Renew ties and remove only broken or diseased wood.
Do not do this: Do not confuse new green canes with brown fruited ones; the green canes are next year’s harvest.
Strong upright stems form a narrow bundle around the central guide.
Large red fruit ripens on short laterals along the column.
After August fruited stems are removed and new ones take their place vertically.
Mature RASPBERRY TOWER® forms a narrow bundle of strong vertical stems with fruit on short laterals along the column.
Columnar habit comes from narrow branching angles and strong mechanical cane strength, not constant tying or tipping.
What to expect after planting: Strong upright stems form a narrow bundle around the central guide.
RASPBERRY TOWER® was created in Japan by breeder Toshihiko Hara, working with Rubus crataegifolius, an Asian species known for strong upright stems and good hardiness. The aim was a fruiting Rubus growing as a narrow column rather than a broad row.
Among the new selections, ‘Hara-rasp’ stood out: stems remained clustered and strong enough to stand almost unaided, while large glossy red fruit over 2cm ripened from June to August on short laterals.
The selection received European protection as EU 20221969 and was released as RASPBERRY TOWER®. In 2022 it received a Bronze award at Plantarium, recognising its innovative narrow architecture and value in modern small gardens.
This Asian species differs from European Rubus idaeus in cane strength, leaf form and naturally vertical architecture.
Narrow branch angles, greater basal diameter and increased lignification allow stems to resist bending under wind and fruit load.
Six practical answers for choosing, growing, harvesting and pruning this exact cultivar.
It is self-fertile and crops alone. Insects help large red fruit fill evenly.
1.2m high and approximately 0.6m wide, with the habit described above.
Yes, in a heavy 45–55-litre container with a slim vertical guide and protection from wind throw.
Fruit ripens successively from June into August on stems grown the previous year.
Not a large trellis. One slim vertical guide or small cage keeps the narrow bundle safe in wind.
After harvest remove fruited stems at the base and retain 3–5 new vertical ones.
