Family: Pinaceae • Pot diameter: 15 cm • Height: ~25 cm
Picea glauca var. albertiana 'Alberta Globe' is the “miniature spruce” that naturally forms a clean, dense, almost perfect globe — without you chasing it with pruning shears. Its needles are extremely short and tightly packed, with fresh light-green spring growth that matures into a deeper green. It’s a brilliant choice for pots, entrances, rock gardens and small plantings where you want year-round structure in a jewel-sized footprint that won’t run away on you.
Outdoors in a bright spot with sun or partial shade. It prefers well-draining soil and dislikes constant moisture, especially in winter. In a pot, choose a stable position away from hot, drying air currents, and make sure drainage is excellent at the base.
Design goal: a globe-like anchor that “ties” the planting together all year.
Taxonomic background: Picea glauca (white spruce) belongs to the Pinaceae family. In horticulture, forms associated with var. albertiana are valued for their dwarf habit and exceptionally compact foliage, making them ideal for pots and small gardens.
Habitat & distribution: The species is native to North America. Dwarf ornamental forms draw on the genus’ natural cold tolerance and provide permanent structure in the landscape.
Naming (etymology): 'Alberta Globe' describes the plant’s habit: a dense green “globe”. “Alberta” references the region historically associated with the spread and popularity of dwarf white spruce forms.
Selection & propagation: This cultivar was established for its very slow growth and naturally spherical symmetry. It is propagated vegetatively (typically grafting in nursery production) to keep its shape, density and needle texture consistent. It is widely regarded as a reliable ornamental choice for year-round form.

|---|---|
| 🌿 Botanical name | Picea glauca var. albertiana 'Alberta Globe' |
| 🪴 Pot / size | 15 cm • height ~25 cm |
| 🌲 Foliage | Evergreen • very short needles • very dense crown |
| ☀️ Light | Sun to partial shade (outdoors). |
| 💧 Watering | Moderate • water when the top layer dries • avoid constant moisture. |
| 📏 Growth rate | Very slow • typically only a few centimetres per year. |
| ℹ️ Use note | Not edible; needles are not for chewing and may irritate sensitive mouths or stomachs. |
It prefers a sunny spot but also tolerates partial shade. With more light it keeps a tighter, more compact and symmetrical shape.
Water when the top layer of the mix dries out and always empty any water from a saucer or outer pot. Avoid constant moisture, especially in low temperatures.
Usually not. This cultivar is naturally spherical. If a faster shoot appears and breaks the outline, remove it early to keep the globe even.
In hard frost, protect the pot so the root ball doesn’t freeze for many hours (insulate the sides or move it to a sheltered spot). Keep the mix slightly moist, never waterlogged, and avoid exposure to very cold, drying winds.
