Orchiata is recognised as one of the leading substrates for orchids and is made in New Zealand from natural, aged Pinus radiata bark. The 9–12 mm Power grade suits young and mature orchids with medium-sized roots, providing a stable, open structure that supports a reliable balance of moisture and airflow and helps extend the interval between repotting.
The bark undergoes a controlled natural ageing process rather than composting. This removes the water-repellent outer layer while keeping the core of each piece hard and structurally stable.
Aged Power No.5 bark, graded into 9–12 mm pieces and ready to use straight from the pack.
The hard bark pieces retain their shape and help reduce how often repotting is needed.
The Power grade provides 49–53% AFP and 56.8% WHC, keeping roots aerated without abrupt moisture loss.
The processed surface rewets effectively and supports a more reliable wet-and-dry cycle.
Suitable for Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, Odontoglossum, Dendrobium and Paphiopedilum, as well as other orchids matched to a 9–12 mm grade.
Use an orchid pot with adequate drainage holes and avoid a pot that is excessively wider than the root system.
Place a thin layer of Orchiata in the bottom and keep the roots below the rim of the pot.
Fill the gaps without firm pressure and tap the sides lightly so the bark settles evenly.
Wet the Orchiata thoroughly after repotting and allow all excess water to drain away.
Use Orchiata straight from the pack. Washing is unnecessary and removes the dolomite added during production.
Natural, aged Pinus radiata bark in a uniform 9–12 mm Power No.5 grade.
No washing, flushing or pre-soaking is required. It can be used on its own as an orchid substrate.
Store the pack in a cool, shaded and covered area, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Allow air to circulate around it and protect it from rain or standing water.
AFP and WHC values apply to the 9–12 mm Power grade. pH and EC are initial product values.
Orchiata gives the roots airflow and a stable moisture cycle. Orchid Myst completes the routine with ready-to-use, gentle feeding for leaves, aerial roots and the surface of the bark, with no dilution required.
Quick answers about choosing the grade, using, watering and storing Orchiata.
Its base is natural, aged New Zealand Pinus radiata bark graded into 9–12 mm pieces. Dolomite is added during production to set the initial pH and provide calcium and magnesium.
The 9–12 mm Power grade suits young and mature orchids with medium-sized roots, including Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, Odontoglossum, Dendrobium and Paphiopedilum.
No. Use it straight from the pack. Washing removes the added dolomite and provides no benefit to the product.
Check the weight of the pot and the moisture inside the substrate. In small pots, allow roughly the top 2–3 cm to dry; in larger pots, allow the top 4–5 cm to dry. Frequency changes with the orchid, pot and season.
Yes. Dolomite initially provides calcium and magnesium, but it does not replace a complete feed. Use a fertiliser suitable for orchids and follow its label directions.
White powder is usually dolomite and should not be washed away. A fine fungal coating may also appear in warm, damp conditions; it does not harm the orchid. Aerate the material and keep it cooler and drier.
