Juniperus communis 'Repanda'
Little height, lots of spread 📐
Family: Cupressaceae • Pot diameter: 15cm • Height: 30cm
Cupressaceae Evergreen conifer Morning sun Extremely cold hardy Creeping growth
RHS Recommended: Award of Garden Merit: Juniperus communis 'Repanda' has received the important distinction of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), which helps highlight reliable, easy-to-grow plants that perform well in suitable conditions.
Juniperus communis 'Repanda' transforms the classic character of an evergreen conifer into a low, wide composition with quiet strength and an exceptionally polished look. Its slender stems spread radially and overlap densely, forming a natural green relief with clean lines and beautiful continuity. The short needles have a deep green colour, subtle silvery-white touches and a softer texture than we usually expect from a juniper, while in winter they can take on elegant bronze tones. Its creeping silhouette offers permanent structure without severity and gives every composition a sense of maturity from the very beginning. It is a timeless choice with an authentic natural style, fine detail and the quality of a plant that becomes more beautiful as it spreads.
Light
🌤️ Gentle sun
Morning sun or a very bright position, with protection from the hot afternoon hours.
Watering
💧 Moderate
Deep watering when the surface dries, without permanently wet soil.
Hardiness
❄️ Very high
Cold is rarely a problem; summer heat needs more attention.
Growth
↔️ Slow & creeping
Gradually spreads into a dense, low evergreen layer.
What makes it special
- 🧭 The stems start slightly raised and then spread horizontally in all directions.
- 🌲 The needles grow in whorls of three around the twig and carry a characteristic pale stomatal band.
- 🧶 The very dense branching creates even coverage without the heavy, rigid look of other conifers.
Ideal use
- 🪨 In a rock garden or between natural stones, where the horizontal growth follows the terrain beautifully.
- ⛰️ On a slope and at the front of a border as permanent evergreen groundcover.
- 🪴 In a wide pot or low planter, with enough free space to show off its creeping line.
Where to place it
At its current height of 30cm, it works best low: at the front of a border, beside stone, at the top of a slope or in a wide pot placed on the floor. In warm lowland and urban areas of Greece, prefer a spot with morning sun and afternoon protection, good air circulation and a cool root environment. In mountain or noticeably cooler regions, it can receive more hours of direct sun. It is not the right choice for dark shade, an enclosed courtyard that traps heat or an exposed roof garden where the small pot overheats. Because its growth is mainly horizontal, leave space around the plant and do not squeeze it between tall, dense species.
Plant pairings
- With Pinus mugo 'Pumilio', for contrast between a low creeping line and a compact, rounded mass.
- With Sesleria autumnalis or Festuca glauca, so the steady evergreen outline is framed by fine movement.
- With Sedum kamtschaticum and Sempervivum between stones, for seasonal colour and different textures in a well-draining composition.

Correct botanical identity: The full name is Juniperus communis 'Repanda'. It is a selected clone of the natural species and not a hybrid. In older literature it may appear as Juniperus communis var. repanda, but modern horticultural naming correctly keeps 'Repanda' as a cultivar.
The species: Juniperus communis was published by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 and is an accepted species with a natural range across the subarctic and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Its enormous geographic distribution explains the great variety of forms found in the wild, from upright shrubs to plants creeping close to the ground.
The story of 'Repanda': The original plant was found growing wild in Ireland by nurseryman Maurice Prichard of Riversley Nurseries. It was transferred to the Netherlands for propagation and introduced to the trade in 1934 by M. Koster & Sons nursery in Boskoop. The selection stood out for its extremely dense, low and symmetrically spreading growth.
How the variety is maintained: Because 'Repanda' is a specific clone, its traits are maintained by vegetative propagation, mainly by cuttings, and not by seed. This keeps its form, density and foliage texture consistent from plant to plant.
1) Light: In warm regions, give 4–6 hours of gentle morning sun or very bright partial shade, without deep shade. In a cool or mountain climate, it can be grown with more direct sun. Protect it from hot western sun, reflected heat from walls and overheated flooring.
2) Watering: Water deeply when the first few centimetres of soil have dried and let the excess water drain away completely. After establishment in the ground, it tolerates short dry periods, but the 15cm pot needs more frequent checking in the Greek summer.
3) Soil: It needs loose, well-draining soil or substrate with mineral material, without constant moisture around the roots. If repotted into a container, choose a wide pot with several drainage holes and increase the size gradually.
💡 Tip: If it will be planted in the ground in a warm region, prefer autumn after the major heat has passed, or late winter. This gives it time to develop roots before the first demanding summer. A mineral mulch layer of gravel helps keep the foliage clean without holding moisture on the plant’s crown.
🤔 Did you know? Juniperus communis has one of the widest natural distributions among woody plants on the planet: it occurs in subarctic and temperate regions across Europe, Asia and North America, taking impressively different forms depending on climate and elevation.
Why you’ll love it features
- 🧭 It creates natural horizontal movement and fills space without hiding the plants behind it.
- 🌲 It stays evergreen and structured in every season, with a subtle winter colour shift.
- 🏅 It is an old, proven selection with an active RHS Award of Garden Merit for the exact variety.
🧠 Greenleaf for plant geeks — scientific facts nobody asked for science
- 🔬 The needles of the species form in whorls of three, and their pale line is a stomatal band, where the gas-exchange pores are concentrated.
- 🫐 The so-called juniper “berries” are not true fruits; they are fleshy cones, because junipers are gymnosperms and do not form flowers or ovaries.
- ⚥ The species is usually dioecious: male and female cones appear on different plants, and pollination happens by wind.
- 🧬 Because every authentic 'Repanda' is vegetatively propagated from the same historical clone, a true plant of the variety does not come from seed.
Is it suitable for the hot Greek summer? heat
It can be grown in Greece, but 'Repanda' comes from a species of cooler and temperate regions and is not the best choice for an uncovered, overheating roof garden. In warm lowland cities, it needs morning sun, afternoon protection, airflow and roots that do not dry out or overheat for long periods. In cool and mountain regions it is clearly more comfortable and can receive more sun.
Can it stay in a pot? pot
Yes, as long as the next pot is wide, stable and has several drainage holes. Repot gradually, leave room for horizontal growth and avoid a black container that bakes in afternoon sun. In summer, check moisture more often, because roots in a container heat up and dry much faster than roots in the ground.
How much space does it need in the ground? spread
Allow at least 1.5m of free space in diameter for its long-term growth. In the first years the spread is slow, but the stems move steadily in all directions. Do not plant it against a narrow path or at the base of a vigorous shrub; its form is shown best when it can spread without frequent restrictive pruning.
Does it produce the familiar juniper “berries”? cones
This should not be taken for granted. Juniperus communis is usually dioecious, meaning male and female cones form on different plants, while production of mature seed cones requires a female clone and compatible pollen from a male plant nearby. Reliable available sources do not consistently document the sex of the commercial clone 'Repanda', so cone production cannot be promised.
