Blooms that look like pink graffiti brushed across fluffy flower panicles 🎨
Family: Hydrangeaceae • Pot diameter: 19cm (3L) • Height: 40–45cm
‘Graffiti’ is a beautiful choice for anyone looking for a hydrangea with a more artistic personality: each flower panicle looks as if it has been painted by hand, starting from a clean white base and gradually filling with pink tones and deeper raspberry markings as the season progresses. The shrub keeps a neat, upright form with enough volume to work as a seasonal highlight in borders or large pots, while still feeling modern and refined. Ideal for entrances, patios and display spots where you want colour, structure and character without an overly heavy look.
Choose a position with sun to partial shade and good air circulation. In a pot, use a large container with excellent drainage, so the volume of the flower panicles and the upright form are well supported without the stems bending too easily.
Composition goal: clean geometry, strong colour intensity and balanced volumes.
Taxonomic background: Hydrangea paniculata belongs to the family Hydrangeaceae and is known for its large panicle-shaped inflorescences and flowering on new wood, which allows strong pruning without losing the season’s bloom.
Selection/breeding & distribution: ‘Graffiti’ carries the selection code ‘ROU201606’ and is protected by PBR. It was selected for its strong white–pink contrast, brush-mark style spotting and clean, upright framework with good support for the weight of the flowers.
Creation story — selection narrative: It originated from selective cultivation of Hydrangea paniculata in a European nursery, where breeders were looking for a panicle hydrangea with a more artistic character. Among many seedlings, the clone that became ‘Graffiti’ stood out for its vivid pink marks over creamy flowers — like a small living canvas in the garden.
Hydrangea paniculata flowers on new wood, so the ideal pruning time is late winter to early spring, usually from late February to early March after hard frosts have passed. Shorten the previous year’s flowering stems evenly to 2–3 buds from their base, usually leaving 20–40cm depending on the desired height, to encourage strong new growth with large flower panicles. Remove weak, inward-facing or crossing stems completely to maintain a clean framework and good air circulation; aim for 8–12 main stems. For rejuvenating older plants, cut around one third of the oldest stems back to the base each year. In a pot, a slightly shorter pruning approach helps maintain a sturdy, upright shape. The dried flower heads can remain for winter interest and be removed in spring. Work with clean tools and, after pruning, support the plant with proper watering and light feeding.
