Trumpet-shaped flowers, but without making a scene 🎺
Family: Scrophulariaceae • Pot size: 3 litres • Height: 50–60 cm
Eremophila 'Thunderbolt'® is an evergreen, dense shrub with a clean, full silhouette and tubular flowers in blue-purple tones that give the plant real presence rather than just an occasional splash of colour. Its main flowering season is usually from late autumn into spring, often extending toward the first warm weeks, while in mild conditions it may also produce scattered blooms outside the main season. The flowers are rich in nectar, so the plant also works as a living point of interest in the garden. Given full sun and sharply drained soil, it becomes an excellent choice for a low hedge, screening or as a standalone feature that looks elegant without demanding high-maintenance care.
Plant it outdoors in a full-sun position with soil that drains well. Avoid heavy soils that stay wet for long periods. To keep the shape cleaner and denser, a light trim after the main flowering season helps maintain a tidy outline.
Role in a composition: a structural shrub with a colour peak in the cool season — it fills space, closes gaps and gives a clear focal point.
What it is in practice: 'Thunderbolt' is widely circulated in Australia as a hybrid cultivar of Eremophila, commonly associated with Eremophila alternifolia × Eremophila maculata.
Naming and commercial circulation: Closely similar or identical material has also circulated under other trade names such as 'Thundercloud', 'Wild Berry' and earlier references to 'Blue Thunder'.
Flower character: The flowers are classically eremophila-like: five-parted, with petals fused into a tube, nectar-rich, and borne from the leaf axils.
Propagation and stability: As a cultivar, it remains true to type only through vegetative propagation, usually by cuttings.

Yes. It is a naturally dense shrub and responds very well to light pruning, so it works beautifully as a low hedge or screening plant.
Once established, it is a very tough choice for sunny, lower-water gardens, provided the soil drains properly.
After the main flowering season, with light pruning to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth.
