Pink flowers, properly serious fragrance 🌸
Clethra • Family: Clethraceae • Pot: 3 L • Height: 30 cm
Clethra alnifolia 'Ruby Spice' is an elegant deciduous shrub with a very distinctive presence thanks to its upright flower spikes in a rich pink tone and its intensely sweet, spicy fragrance. It feels more refined than a typical summer-flowering shrub, because it fills the garden with colour and scent later in the season, just when many other plants have already passed their strongest moment. It is an excellent choice for gardens, large pots, lightly shaded courtyards and places near seating areas, where the flowering display can really be enjoyed up close.
Choose a position in sun or light partial shade, ideally where the soil does not dry out completely and too quickly. It suits gardens with a cooler microclimate, borders enriched with organic matter, and large pots that are watered consistently. It is especially effective near a path, entrance or seating area, because its fragrance is one of the main reasons to grow it.
Role in a composition: the fragrant flowering shrub that brings colour and interest at the end of summer, when many other plants have already settled down.
Botanical background: Clethra alnifolia is a deciduous shrub in the Clethraceae family, native to eastern North America. The species is known for fragrant flowering and for coping well in positions with more moisture than many other ornamental shrubs enjoy.
The 'Ruby Spice' cultivar: This is one of the best-known pink selections of the species, valued for its richer flower colour and especially sweet fragrance. The flowers appear in upright spikes from late summer into early autumn, while the foliage later takes on attractive yellow tones.
Garden character: It is appreciated for combining good performance in sun or partial shade, strongly scented flowering at a time when few shrubs are at their best, and a mature size that remains manageable for gardens or large containers.
Seasonal value: 'Ruby Spice' gives interest in more than one moment of the year: the main highlight is the late-summer flower display, but the yellow autumn foliage also adds a warm finishing note to the season.

Yes, and it can perform very well there, as long as the soil stays cool and the site is not excessively hot and dry. In more sun it will usually flower more heavily if it has enough water.
It needs more consistent moisture than a typical drought-tolerant Mediterranean-style shrub. It should not sit in soggy soil, but it also does not like prolonged dryness, especially in summer and particularly in a pot.
Yes, and that is one of its biggest strengths. The flowers have a sweet, spicy scent that becomes much more noticeable when the plant is placed near a path or seating area.
The main flowering season arrives in late summer and can continue into early autumn, depending on the growing conditions and climate of the site.
