Family: Haemodoraceae • Pot size: 3 litres • Height: 60–70 cm
Anigozanthos 'Red', or kangaroo paw, is one of those plants that gives an outdoor space an instant designer finish: a neat basal fan of foliage and tall flowering stems topped with velvety, tubular red flowers that look exotic without being difficult. It stands beautifully in a terrace pot, drops straight into borders as a clean vertical accent, and works like a colour statement that does not need much around it to hold its own.
Place it in a sunny position with good air circulation. It wants soil or potting mix that drains well, especially in a container, so the root system stays light and healthy.
Role in a composition: a vertical lead accent that reads from a distance and gives strong rhythm.
Taxonomic background: The genus Anigozanthos belongs to the family Haemodoraceae and includes the plants widely known as kangaroo paws, recognised for their velvety flowers carried on tall stems.
Native range, habitat and distribution: Kangaroo paws are native to south-western Western Australia, where they are associated with open, sunny habitats. Their nectar-rich flowers are closely linked to bird pollination in the wild.
Naming and common name: The name Anigozanthos is generally interpreted from Greek roots referring to the irregular form of the flower. The common name “kangaroo paw” refers to the way the flowers open in a shape reminiscent of a kangaroo’s paw.
Selection and commercial circulation: In cultivation there are many red-flowered hybrids and selections bred for garden performance and cut-flower use. The commercial label 'Red' is often used descriptively for red-flowering forms rather than pointing to one universally standardised cultivar line.

Yes. The more light it receives, the stronger the colour and the more composed the plant tends to look. It will tolerate partial shade, but sun is where it performs best.
While establishing it wants more regular watering. Once rooted in, it becomes tougher, but flowering is usually better when watering stays consistent. The key is always excellent drainage.
Remove old flowering stems close to the base and clear away dry foliage. That gives the plant room for fresh growth and new flower spikes.
It can take light frost for short periods. In colder nights, some protection or a more sheltered position helps it keep a better appearance and steadier growth.
