Hydroculure with Lecca
Everything you need to know!
Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without the use of soil, using instead inert media such as expanded clay (LECA – Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate). This technique is becoming increasingly popular for both indoor and outdoor gardens.
What is LECA?
LECA consists of small, spherical balls of clay that have been heat treated. The result is a light, porous material that can absorb and retain water while allowing air to flow around the plant roots.
Advantages of growing with LECA
- Better aeration of the roots: The LECA pores allow proper air circulation, reducing the risk of root rot.
- Humidity control: The clay balls absorb water and gradually release it, providing plants with the necessary moisture.
- Less pests and diseases: Compared to soil, LECA is not a breeding ground for insects and fungi.
- Easier transplanting: Plants can be easily transferred from one container to another without stressing their roots.
- Water saving: The use of LECA reduces water wastage as it retains moisture for a longer period of time.
How to use LECA:
- Preparation of LECA
- Before use, wash the balls thoroughly. LECA to remove dust.
- Soak them in water for 12-24 hours to absorb enough moisture.
- Transplanting plants into LECA
- Remove the soil from the roots of the plant by carefully rinsing it with water.
- Place the plant in a a suitable pot and fill with LECA around the roots.
- Add water and nutrient solutions
- Place the prepared pot into a correspondingly sized decorative pot.
- Water appropriately until the water meter rises to Opt or Max so that the plant draws moisture through the LECA.
- Maintenance and care
- Check the water level indicator and top up water when needed.
Suitable plants for LECA
Most houseplants can be grown with LECA, such as:
- Monstera deliciosa (Monstera deliciosa)
- Monsteris deliciosa (Monsteris deliciosa) (Philodendron)
- Sansevieria (Sansevieria)
- Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
- Orchids
Conclusion
Hydroponics with LECA is a practical and efficient method for plant care, offering convenience, cleanliness and better root growth. If you're looking for an alternative way of growing, LECA is a great option!
