It is an evergreen succulent, also known as "elephant plant", since in Africa it is used as elephant’s food.

Portulacaria afra έχει καφέ στελέχη, από τα οποία γεννιούνται δίχρωμα φύλλα: είναι πράσινα από μέσα και κίτρινα από έξω.

It normally blooms after spring and summer rains with small pink flowers.
