Thuja occidentalis 'golden smaragd' - Τούγια
This yellow cultivar of the popular oriental Thuja is a very new introduction.
This neat conifer deserves to be well-known not least for its alluring shade of yellowish - green, a vibrant yellow emerald, which makes it such a gem.
Yellow tints appear on flushes of new growth in the spring. It grows very slowly to 2.5 metres with a neat, narrowly pyramidal shape formed by dense, tactile foliage.
It can be trimmed lightly to shape more formally and can be grown close together in a line to act as a fragmented screen or to mark a boundary.
These hardy conifers are effective in pots either side of a front door, planted in the border to punctuate the planting scheme, or to brighten up a dull fence.
They are best planted in full sun or semi-shade in well-drained soil in all locations except those which are very exposed.
Golden Smaragd was bred by Edward Kubik in Janowice, Poland, from a seedling of Thuja occidentalis Smaragd and after 10 years of testing was released into the garden market in 2009.
