Mammillaria gracilis 8.5cm

Mammillaria gracilis Pfeiff. - Μαμιλάρια
Συνώνυμα: Mammillaria vetula subs. gracilis
Οικογένεια: Cactaceae

Διάμετρος γλάστρας:8.5εκ., Ύψος:15εκ.

Mammillaria vetula ssp. gracilis is also known as "Thimble mammillaria" and "Thimble cactus".

It is a small-sized, slow-growing plant. It forms many suckers around the stem, that can reach up to 13 cm in height.

You have to be very careful in touching it or transferring it, because it is very delicate, the small suckers can detach from the stem. If this happens you can safely ground them back, because they root easily, forming new seedlings.

The thin white spines are curved towards the stem and cover it almost completely.

From spring until autumn, it blooms with small cream colored flowers of a light pink shade on the outside-base of the petals.

  • It likes an exposure to full sun in rather airy locations.
  • It is preferable to keep it at mild temperatures and never below 5 °C, for this reason it is recommended to shelter it during the winter period.
  • Water moderately but only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water it once a week in spring and summer, reduce watering to once every two months in autumn, and to suspend it completely in winter.
  • The best soil is a well-draining one, even better if further enriched with inert materials such as pumice, sand or lapilli.
  • They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
